MONTPELIER, Vt. -
Vermont dental hygienists are speaking out against the decision to exclude adult dental care as the state adopts federal health care reform.
State officials last week presented a plan to health regulators. It outlines the coverage Vermonters will get once the state transitions to the health care exchange in 2014. While the Vermont State Dental Society agrees with that decision, hygienists say the omission of adult oral health is shocking.
"Adults need oral health care. There's the systemic link to oral health and it's important that their overall health and their oral health connects together, and they have an overall healthy body, including their oral health," said Becky Diedrich of the Vermont Dental Hygienists Association.
The association is urging the public to contact the Green Mountain Care Board to demand that adult dental care be covered in the upcoming Health Care Exchange.
