Brookfield Floating Bridge to see work in 2014

BROOKFIELD, Vt. -

Plans are moving forward once again to reopen Brookfield's famous Floating Bridge.

The historic bridge-- one of just two in the country-- has been closed to vehicle traffic for the past four years.

Local officials say efforts to get it fixed were moving forward last August, but that was before Tropical Storm Irene realigned the state's transportation priorities. State officials now say the $2 million project is slated for 2014.

Engineers have been conducting field visits this summer and local residents say they are keeping their fingers crossed.

"It's inconvenient right now, not being able to come across the bridge. Everybody talks about the Floating Bridge, and they get here and they have to look at it from afar, because they can't drive on it. That's what they're here for," said Myrton Therrien of East Braintree.

"We can't wait to drive across it. Our little one-- she hasn't had a chance to see it. It's been closed since she's been born. Our other two-- they remember. Everybody from all around comes here just to see this," said Jessica Therrien of East Braintree. "Yeah , it will be very nice to see this open again."

The bridge, which is supported by pontoons, was originally built in 1820 when logs were used to cross the ice on Sunset Lake.
