Hearing set for man charged in 2005 stabbing in Vt

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Lawyers will clash this week over whether a man deemed incompetent to stand trial for attempted murder should be moved to a less restrictive environment.

The lawyer for 55-year-old Mark Sailor says it's unlikely that he'll ever be fit to assist in his defense. He's been diagnosed with schizophrenia and delusions following his arrest for the unprovoked stabbing of 61-year-old Barbara Ashworth on Sept. 30, 2005. She survived the brutal attack.

The Rutland Herald says defense lawyer Joyce Brenner is seeking to end the criminal case but isn't seeking to have Sailor freed. Instead she wants to move him to an undisclosed facility where he would continue receive treatment.

Rutland County State's Attorney Marc Brierre will oppose the plan Tuesday in Rutland criminal court.
