CHAMPLAIN, N.Y. -
Shorter waits at the Champlain Port of Entry in New York.
The port, which is the main route from Montreal to the Adirondack Northway, is having one of the busiest summers in years. In the past wait times could be three to four hours. But this year, rarely has there been a wait time of even one hour. Port officials say a major expansion and increase of officers in Champlain is the reason for the shorter wait times.
"They have an understanding of what it is we do everyday -- fighting terrorism, keeping terroristic weapons of mass affect out of the U.S. And the experience -- the day to day seeing, the hundreds of thousands over days and weeks -- they are better prepared and understand what they are doing," said Paul Mongillo with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Mongillo says people using smaller ports in the rural areas have also decreased weight times at the Champlain Port.
