CAMBRIDGE, Vt. -
A teenager suffered severe injuries Monday in a fall on Mount Mansfield.
The 15-year-old boy was hiking with his father off Route 108 in Smugglers Notch at about 9 a.m. Police, fire and technical rescue units rushed to the scene to help rescue the injured boy from the steep, rocky terrain.
"He and a relative were hiking up on some paths. It's very rocky terrain. A lot of caverns that people visit. And they were just exploring the area, trying to get some views, and it appears he lost his footing and slipped off some type of ledge," said Vermont State Police Sgt. Julie Cooper.
Rescuers believe the boy fell and tumbled 40 to 80 foot. Witnesses say he suffered multiple severe injuries. Police have not yet released his name and his condition is not available.
