LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -
An historic ice rink in Lake Placid is getting its old look back.
The Olympic Center's 1932 ice rink is undergoing two major projects. One is to restore the masonry on the exterior. It's very meticulous to match the brick and grout. Only the bricks that need to be touched will be. Also, windows that were enclosed by bricks to accommodate bleachers for the 1980 games are being re-installed. The rink is still used for skating and hockey.
"This is the oldest Winter Olympic facility in the world, we want to pay respect to the facility and that heritage and maintain it so it can embrace the character of the time," said Bob Hammond with the Olympic Regional Development Authority.
When complete, the 1932 facility will join the adjacent conference center. Work is scheduled to be done in October. The 375-thousand dollar project is being funded by a state grant.
