Carly Beyar's first goal of the season proved to be a game-winner as the Fairfield Stags defeated the Vermont Catamounts, 1-0, in women's soccer action at the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field.
After a scoreless first half, Beyar lofted a shot from the right side of the penalty box over the outstretched arm of UVM goalkeeper Ally Ramos to give the Stags a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.
Vermont could not find the equalizer over the final 30 minutes and falls to 1-3 on the year. Fairfield moves to 1-1 to start the season.
Ramos and Sarah Leiby split time in the Vermont net and combined to make five stops. Veronica Saez was credited with four saves for Fairfield to pick up the win.
Central Connecticut shutout New Hampshire, 4-0, in the first game of the day and came away as the TD Bank Classic Champions based on goal differential.
The Catamounts return to action on Friday (Aug. 31) when they travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac in a 4 p.m. match.
