MONTPELIER, Vt. -
Biomass inflamed passions in
Montpelier Wednesday.
About 100 protestors hit City Hall
steps to convince councilors to adopt a biomass heating district.
The $20 million proposal would add two
wood-fired boilers to the state heating plant to service a number of buildings
downtown.
Last week the City Council rejected
the plan in a 4-2 vote.
"If this doesn't move
forward we are locking our city, our taxpayers, our downtown businesses into 30
more years of paying oil prices that have risen in the past and will continue
to rise," said Rebecca Wigg, a member of the Montpelier Energy Advisory
Committee.
City councilors who voted
against the original proposal said the biomass plan was too financially risky.
Wednesday night,
councilors will vote on a revised proposal for biomass in the city.
