Solar panels go up at UVM farm

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Students at UVM are celebrating what they're calling a green victory on campus at the ribbon-cutting for a newly installed solar panel roof.

The 134 panels installed on a barn at UVM's Spear Street Farm in South Burlington will generate about 100 kilowatts of electricity a day, enough to power five to six houses.

Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Ross says this convergence of agriculture and energy is the farm of the future and he's taking note.

"I'm going to be studying what they've done here to find out what I, too, can do to adopt this kind of technology and help fund my farm's energy needs and maybe beyond on my farm," Ross said.

The project cost a little over $135,000-- $80,000 of which came from money students raised. UVM says because of a solar credit program, the university should make back its initial investment in 10 years.
