Ex-Vt. teacher gets 4 to 12 in child sex assault

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - A former Vermont teacher at the Windham Regional Career Center is going to prison for at least 4 years after pleading guilty to repeatedly molesting a child over a decade.

During his sentencing on Thursday, 50-year-old Oliver Brassard admitted he molested the child between 1998 and 2008 in Brattleboro and Putney.

Brassard is a former automotive teacher. He has been in jail since his arrest in July 2011.

Deputy State's Attorney David Gartenstein and Brassard's attorney, Bettina Buehler, agreed the sentence of 4 to 12 years in prison "appropriately served justice."

The Brattleboro Reformer reports Judge David Suntag thanked the victim, his family and Brassard's family for attending the hearing.

Suntag said it was the type of offense "that takes away childhood trust, growth and much more."
