Vt. Corrections officer back at work after attack

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say a correctional officer is back at work at the Springfield prison after he was attacked by an inmate.

Police said officer Brandon Gallant was approached by an inmate, Gene Quick, on Aug. 17, shortly after Quick requested entry to the recreational area. They said Quick struck Gallant on his head, leading to a struggle between the two.

The Eagle-Times reports other correctional officers were able to secure Quick. They said his handcuffs were not properly fastened and that he was able to use them as a weapon consistent with brass knuckles.

Gallant suffered a cut to the head. Quick, who is serving time for previous assaults on correctional staff, was not injured. He's scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 9 on the assault charge.
