Vermont is the first state to introduce same sex marriage by legislative approval rather than a court order. Same sex marriage is legal in 8 U.S. States and the district of Columbia. Back in 2009 the Vermont house got the exact number of votes needed to override Governor Douglas' veto. Matthew Lytthouse and his husband testified in front of the legislature three years ago. Lytthouse says they still lack rights at the federal level that make the fight worth furthering. He says he's proud to live in a state that's a leader on issues of civil rights.
