ESSEX, Vt. -
Essex is closing in on a new location for its police headquarters.
Town officials are working out a 20 year lease-to-own agreement with IBM for land the company owns on Maple Street. Police are currently split between three facilities in town, with most of the department cramming into the town offices. Officials say the 3.4 acre site would streamline police operations and suit the needs of the department for the next 40 years.
"If all goes well on November 6th -- that will be a general obligation bond vote. We'll have an 18-thousand square foot, one story police facility on that site. One of the big components of that is a floor plan that highlights what's called operational adjacencies, so grouping similar functions near each other to really maximize the efficiency and the safety functions of the facility," said Trevor Lashua, the Essex Assistant Town Manager.
The project is slated to cost roughly six million dollars.
