BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -
The Brattleboro Retreat is looking for new ways to secure funding for the psychiatric hospital into the future.
The retreat was established 178 years ago, but through the years has struggled to maintain services with shrinking state and federal dollars.
Earlier this year, Medicare threatened to pull funding after an inspection sparked by patient deaths.
The Brattleboro Reformer says retreat directors are working on establishing a $200,000 endowment by the end of the year. So far they have $155,000 committed to the fund.
Retreat directors say they know it isn't much but hope it will offer some financial security into the future.
