MONTPELIER, Vt. -
The state of Vermont plans to spend more than $3 million to help expand broadband service to 544 new locations.
Gov. Peter Shumlin says the Vermont Telecommunications Authority has just approved the funding to help FairPoint bring the service to a total of 2,850 sites by the end of 2013.
The company plans to spend more than $6.5 million on the project.
Officials say the locations are within 59 target communities and are among the toughest to reach.
