Deadly shooting at election victory party in Quebec

MONTREAL -

One person is dead and another critically injured after a gunman opened fire at a victory party for a new government leader in Quebec.

That gunman, who police are only describing as a 50-year-old man, is in custody.

Police say the shooting happened at a midnight rally for Quebec's new premier, Pauline Marois of the separatist Parti Quebecois. She was whisked off stage and was not injured.

It's not clear at this time if the gunman was trying to shoot Marois.

This mars what was supposed to be a celebration for Marois and her political party, who favor separation for the French-speaking province from Canada.

Marois becomes the first female premiere in Quebec history, taking the title from liberal party leader Jean Charest after more than a decade at the helm.

Her party will now form the province's next minority government and will push Ottawa to give Quebec more power and stronger language laws.

It was a bitter campaign battle in the wake of student protests over tuition, a soft economy, and allegations of corruption.
