FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.Y. -
Some Franklin County, N.Y., employees are being paid to stay off the county's health insurance plan, because officials say it is cheaper than paying for medical coverage.
The Plattsburgh Press-Republican reports that this December, those who opted out will receive a bonus: $2,000 for individuals, and $4,000 for families. The county expects to pay $158,000 to the 50 employees who opted out this year, seeing a savings of three to four times that amount by not having them on the plan.
Legislators admit it is a crazy system, but they reserve the right to offer the buyout when it is beneficial to the county.
