Burlington councilor pushes pot legalization

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A Burlington city councilor is pushing for the legalization of marijuana.

Progressive Max Tracy wants a referendum question added to the Nov. 6 ballot asking voters if they would support the legalization, regulation and taxation of all cannabis and hemp products. He calls them untapped revenue streams and says the survey results would help guide the conversation in Montpelier.

"We will see some sort of action coming out of this legislative session whether it eventually leads to a passage of a decriminalization measure which I think is a step in the right direction, though not necessarily my ideal scenario. I would like to see more of a full on legalization happen. Obviously that's an uphill battle," Tracy said.

Tracy has the support of two Democratic city councilors. Ed Adrian and Norm Blais are co-sponsoring the initiative.

The public is invited to weigh in on the issue during this Monday's City Council meeting. Tracy says he's confident it will appear on the city ballot.
