GREENWICH, N.Y. -
The two men running for New York's 21st Congressional District squared off in their first debate Wednesday night.
It was hosted by the Washington County Farm Bureau. For the most part, the two opponents agree on many farm issues. But they disagree over Social Security. Republican Matt Doheny wants to raise the eligibility age. Democrat Bill Owens thinks that's a bad idea. Another difference-- the estate tax. That's the amount someone can leave an heir without paying tax. It's due to drop from $5 million to $1 million.
"Clearly that legislation needs to remain intact. We need to maintain the $5 million level in order to protect our family farms," Owens said.
"Here's a plan-- let's get rid of the estate tax. You've already paid," Doheny said.
At least one more debate is planned in Glens Falls. Two others are in the works for Plattsburgh and Watertown.
