Everything Animals: Shelburne Museum goes to the dogs

SHELBURNE, Vt. -

Shelburne Museum and Pet Food Warehouse proudly present the zaniest, wildest, biggest dog party on the planet! Bring your fur bearing, four legged best friend for a day dedicated to dogs.

This year's theme is the Pawlympics! featuring DockDogs competition. Enter your dog to compete in the leaping amazing competition that has dogs flying over water in four different events: Outdoor Big Air, Extreme Vertical, Speed Retreive and Iron Dog. As a special tribute to veterans, disabled veteran Luis Carlos Montalvan, author of best selling book Until Tuesday, signs books and speaks about his triumph over post traumatic stress disorder with help from his golden retriever named Tuesday. Soldiers' Angels Vermont coordinated the Iraq war veteran's visit. Note: Active military and disabled veterans are admitted to Shelburne Museum free of charge.

Here are just some of the non-stop happenings in store:

  • Olympic parade with costume judging
  • Live music by Mount Independence Fife and Drum Corps
  • Dog gone good demonstrations by police dogs, dancing dogs
  • Flying disc dogs competing in the Vermont state championships
  • Hilarious balloon animals
  • Fantastic face painting

Costume Contest Categories: First, second and third prizes in three categories — Favorite Olympic Sport, Favorite Country/Flag, Most Original and one overall Grand Prize Winner.

The whole affair benefits local animal rescue groups and humane societies.

10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday, September 16.  Rain or Shine. $10 adults; $5 children (5-18); Museum Members and dogs are free! Dogs must be on leashes.
