BAKERSFIELD, Vt. -
An elderly couple's home went up in flames Wednesday night in Franklin County.
Crews say when they arrived at the house on Whitney Road in Bakersfield, flames were shooting from all the windows. The couple was not home when the fire started, though one of them was at a neighbor's house.
It took five dozen firefighters to extinguish the blaze.
Bakersfield Fire Chief Todd Cosgrove said the recent rainfall was critical for water supply. He said many of the nearby streams and ponds were very dry, and it would have been difficult to draw water from them if not for the recent rain.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
