A Massachusetts crack cocaine dealer accused of killing a Vermont woman last year may face the death penalty.
Frank Caraballo, 30, is charged with gunning down Melissa Barratt over a drug dispute in Dummerston.
Vermont's U.S. Attorney Tris Coffin must decide if the feds should seek the death penalty. Coffin says Caraballo's case is eligible, but his office is required to weigh the aggravating circumstances in the case. Only the most heinous murders are punishable by death under federal law. Coffin would not say what his recommendation would be.
Thursday, Caraballo was sentenced to 200 months in prison for distributing crack in the Brattleboro area last year.
