Making sure your child is seated safely

Posted: Updated:

Sunday marks the start of child passenger safety week across the country.

Here in Vermont, free spot check's of child safety seats will be offered in counties across the state all week. According to experts, 80-percent of ALL child seats are installed incorrectly and they say improper seat placement can result in injury, ejection, even death. Experts say the top three mistakes parents make are buying the wrong size seat, installing the seat wrong, or incorrectly harnessing the child. A new part of the inspection program this year, parents can now drop off old seats to be recycled. As seats age, they can become unsafe.

Ann Weinstein, child seat expert, said, "You have a lot of brittlness in the plastics, the plastics get old and get weaker. The harness can pull thru the shell and then your child can be ejected. So we'd like to see all of those old carseats come out of the public's hands and get either recycled or thrown away."
