PROCTOR, Vt. -
State regulators have okayed a plan that will ease the pain of a big rate hike for some Green Mountain Power customers.
Sixty-two commercial customers in Proctor saw their rates skyrocket as much as 500 percent last Fall when GMP became the power provider in town. Proctor residents had enjoyed years of below-market rates because their service was subsidized by the previous owner of the power system, the Omya marble company.
Residential customers in town were given a chance to adjust to the higher costs by having the new rates phased-in. Now commercial customers are getting that break too. GMP says the phase-in will allow customers more time to reduce their usage and make energy-efficiency improvements.
