BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's 30 years to life in prison for a Vermont man convicted of trying to abduct a woman off a Burlington street.

Harold Porter, 45, of Swanton was found guilty by a jury last March for the incident that happened in 2009.

Police say Porter grabbed a 27-year-old woman and tried to push her into his vehicle. She managed to escape.

Porter has a previous conviction for unlawful restraint and is a registered sex offender.

Chittenden County Prosecutor T.J. Donovan says the 30 years sentence "sends the message that violence against women will be dealt with harshly."
