Winds knock out power across Vermont

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Thousands of homes lost power Tuesday night, after a wicked wind storm took down trees and power lines.

Heavy rains knocked a large tree onto power lines in Killington, limiting traffic on Route 100 to just one lane.

The storm caused similar problems in Chittenden County, cutting off power to traffic lights and forcing police to wave along cars and trucks.

Fire departments responded to dozens of calls.

"What we ran into here is the availability of Green Mountain Power, obviously more power outages around different communities, they're stretched pretty thin right now. We've been here probably about an hour and a half waiting for them to come in. Once they get here should be probably half and hour, 45 minutes, they'll have it cleaned up, power back on and everything is good," said Chief David Bergeron of the Winooski Fire Department.

One flight was delayed at the Burlington Airport.
