COVENTRY, Vt. -
The state is suing a Vermont farmer for water pollution.
The attorney general's office says Richard Nelson's dairy operation in Coventry is illegally discharging waste from a feed bunker into a stream near the farm. State agriculture officials first notified Nelson of the violation in 2009, but the state says through repeated follow-up visits Nelson has failed to fix the problem.
So now the state is seeking a court injunction and civil penalties against Nelson. The state says Nelson has not responded to the allegations in the complaint.
Nelson says he is no longer operating the dairy farm.
