Barre's Big Dig set to finish in November

BARRE, Vt. -

Barre's Big Dig is now set to be done by mid-November.

The $16 million project is remaking Barre's downtown.

Mayor Thom Lauzon says the project has been talked about since he was in high school, and although it's created traffic headaches, residents are happy about the changes. And Lauzon says several new tenants are set to come to Barre. There are only two empty storefronts now.

"We are pretty proud of it," Lauzon said. "So, for our merchants downtown who look at it-- it's beautiful. New granite bollards, new sidewalks, new plantings, new street lights; all the new amenities. So, you know, for the city of Barre I'm hoping it's a fresh start. We are a community that's been a little down for a number of years and I think there's a change in attitude and I think this has helped usher that change in," Lauzon said.

Traffic is still closed on sections of Main Street while workers finish installing new sewer lines.
