LINCOLN, N.H. -
A Vermont man who recently worked in
the state as a reporter died Wednesday in a kayaking accident.
Police say Alan Panebaker, 29, of
Montpelier, was in the Flume Gorge of the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln, N.H.,
when his kayak overturned and he drowned.
Panebaker graduated from Vermont Law
School last year and was a reporter at VTDigger.org until July when he took a
job with American Whitewater, a river conservation group.
Colleagues at VTDigger describe him as
an avid kayaker who spent much of his free time riding the whitewater rivers of
our region.
Though Panebaker worked only a short time as a reporter,
he earned the respect of his colleagues and the people he covered. Gov. Peter
Shumlin issued a statement saying, "I am deeply sorry to learn of the death of VTDIGGER reporter Alan Panebaker, and my heart goes out to his friends, family, and the VTDIGGER staff. Alan was a fair, thorough and informative reporter, and always had a smile for his fellow journalists and the politicians he covered. He will be missed."
