Irasburg barn burns

Posted: Updated:

A large barn erupted into flames Friday night.

It happened on Back Coventry Road in the Northeast Kingdom town of Irasburg.

Witnesses say firefighters yelled "look out" and "get out of the way" when the barn collapsed around 7:45 Friday night. The barn is on the Malshuk Farm. Neighbors say it's not a working farm. No one was hurt. Flames could be seen shooting from the structure when firefighters first arrived. As of 11 Friday night, there were still on the scene battling hot spots and they shut down the road. We have no word on how it started.

"The investigator's coming. I had six departments here. It took us an hour and a half to get it under control," says Chief Robin Beaton of Irasburg Fire Department.

Firefighters say there was a lot of dry grass nearby that ignited. They kept the blazes from spreading to nearby houses. The chief says there's a chance an old tractor that was used earlier in the day and parked in the barn may have started the blaze.
