ESSEX COUNTY, N.Y. -
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his staff bonded in the great outdoors over the weekend.
Cuomo and his top aides spent Sunday in Boreas Ponds at the southern edge of the High Peaks Wilderness. The group spent the day hiking, canoeing and picnicking, and invited the press along with them.
The Adirondack Park land, located in Essex County, is among the 69,000 acres recently acquired by the state.
Cuomo hopes the new land will be a new way to attract tourists to the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park.
"We have made the park a better park and we have made the park a bigger park. And that is a generational gift that we can give to our children and our grandchildren, so we will pass on the park in a better place and a better condition than it was given to us," Governor Andrew Cuomo said.
The land is currently closed to the public, but the governor hopes to have it open for fishing and hiking next year.
