MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont Republicans are calling for an investigation of Attorney General Bill Sorrell for possible campaign finance violations.

At issue is an ad that ran during the primary campaign. It was paid for by the super PAC Committee for Justice and Fairness. It features former Governor Howard Dean speaking in support of Sorrell. The Vermont Republican Party notes that Dean also worked directly with the Sorrell campaign. The GOP is questioning whether the ads therefore amounted to an illegal coordinated expenditure.

Because Sorrell's office normally handles campaign finance complaints, the Republicans are calling on the governor to appoint an independent counsel to investigate this complaint.
