Grandparents beware-- the attorney general's Consumer Protection division says there's been an unusual spike in telephone scams targeting seniors.
They're called grandparent scams because a young caller claims to be related to the victim and says they're in trouble overseas. The scammers then ask the victim to wire them money. The calls are originating from Latin America.
At least one Vermont consumer was swindled out of $1,000 by this scam.
