Police investigate death of homeless man

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

Almost 24 hours after the discovery of a body in St. Albans, police still don't know for sure who it is or how he died.

Police believe it is Fred Bemis, 59. Bemis' friends filed a missing persons report with police Wednesday. They say he was last seen in the parking lot of the grocery store nearly a month ago. Bemis is homeless and had a camp set up in the wooded area where the body was found.

Police say they cannot positively ID the body or determine if the death was suspicious because the remains had decomposed significantly.

"First we need to know that there was foul play, and now the undetermined cause and undetermined manner says there was no crime committed," Franklin County Prosecutor Jim Hughes said.

Police requested dental records for Bemis in search of a positive ID. They're currently reaching out to determine if he had any family in the area.
