Middlebury lawyer Murray is Vt. lawyer of year

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont lawyer long involved in pushing the state toward same-sex marriage has been named Vermont's Lawyer of the Year in the area of family law.

Susan Murray of the Middlebury-based firm Langrock, Sperry and Wool represented the plaintiffs in the case that resulted in a 1999 state Supreme Court decision saying Vermont was improperly denying marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples.

That in turn prompted the Legislature to pass the first-in-the-nation civil unions law in 2000. Vermont now has full same-sex marriage.

It's the second time Murray has been named Vermont Lawyer of the Year in the family law category.

The awards are given by the peer review publication Best Lawyers.
