Police say a nurse at the Vermont Veterans' Home in Bennington admitted to striking a resident but has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault charges.
Court documents say Elroy Whidden, 82, tapped Mark Demasi, 58, on the waist to get his attention and that Demasi punched him in the nose. Police said Whidden's nose was red and swollen and there was dried blood around his nostrils.
Demasi an 18-year employee at the home, told police Whidden had been swearing at staff and swatted at him in the groin. He said his hand struck out instinctively.
Demasi has been suspended. He was released on conditions he not have contact with the resident and not go to the Bennington home.
