Plattsburgh finalizes new zoning rules

Posted: Updated:

The town of Plattsburgh is finalizing new zoning regulations.

The community is no stranger to new development as big box stores and chain restaurants have been popping up for years. It's all part of an effort to revitalize the economy to replace the old Plattsburgh Air Force Base. But under the new regulations, multifamily housing units would be allowed-- a first for the town of Plattsburgh.

"In the town of Plattsburgh, previously there was no opportunity for residential development. Now we have taken smaller portions near the existing city portion that has existing residential and zone that on a way to allow for multifamily housing," said Phil von Bargen of the Plattsburgh Town Planning and Engineering Department.

One hurdle though, will be the cost of upgrading infrastructure like water and sewer. Most of it still only meets military standards, not stricter municipality standards. Upgrades are expected to cost tens of millions of dollars.
