Researchers: No quick fix for spiny water flea

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -

Researchers say there's no quick fix for an invasive pest in Lake George, but they're hoping to keep it out of Lake Champlain.

A joint task force from New York and Vermont looked at options to stop the spread of the spiny water flea, which competes with fish for food.

But they say control measures like electric barriers and mesh screens on the La Chute River -- which connects Lake George to Lake Champlain -- would not work.

Now, they're hoping raising awareness among fishermen on how to decontaminate their gear will help stop its spread.
