SOUTH HERO, Vt. -
A lakeside home went up in flames Monday afternoon.
A neighbor walking his dog first spotted the blaze in South Hero and called for help. Dozens of firefighters fought back flames but it was no use, the home is a total loss. Fire officials say it does not appear to be suspicious. No one was home and no one was injured. A renter, who moved into the house in September, left around 8 a.m. So officials believe the fire had been going for hours.
"I believe it was smoldering for quite some time with that volume of flames bursting out once we arrived in 10 or 15 minutes. Within 20 to 30 minutes it broke through the windows on the first and second floors and continues to spread from there, " said Assistant Chief Kim Julow of the South Hero Fire Department.
The property owners are out of state.
