Starting this week in Rutland, reporting crime can pay.
The Vermont Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms office is launching a new crime tip line. Officials say informants with good information on firearm and drug activity will be well paid.
The Rutland Herald says the ATF does not always deal with drug trafficking crimes, but because firearms are often related to these crimes, they cross into that agency.
For now they are focusing their efforts in Rutland, where they say narcotics are a big problem.
The number for that tipline is 802-865-4016. ATF officials say if you call in you will most likely be directed to a voicemail and an agent will call you back.
