Vt. Foodbank sees federal funding cut in half

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Vermont Foodbank announced Tuesday it has seen a 50 percent reduction in federal assistance this year.

Organizers say without federal assistance they're lacking more than 1 million pounds of food.

Each year the food shelf serves more than 12,000 Vermonters struggling with hunger.

Sen. Bernie Sanders expressed concern for other low income assistance programs, such as LIHEAP and 3SquaresVT.

"There has been a cut in the bonus program to TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program). I worry about other cuts coming down the line. The Senate recently passed a farm bill which includes a number of nutrition programs the House has yet to pass that, so we will see what happens," said Sanders, I-Vermont.

All federal programs could be in jeopardy if Congress doesn't reach a budget agreement before massive spending cuts automatically take effect next year.
