Shumlin to buy more property in East Montpelier

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Peter Shumlin is answering questions about a piece of property he's trying to buy in East Montpelier. This new development was first reported Wednesday by the Vermont Press Bureau.

Shumlin is in the process of building a home on 27 acres. Now, a deal is in the works that would have him purchasing an abutting 16-acre piece of property, too. Shumlin says he's helping the financially-strapped property owner avoid a tax sale. What's unclear is what the governor will end up paying for the site.

"We're negotiating a price trying to determine what a fair price would be, so we're working that out. For now, we've been able to keep it from being sold as a tax sale, which as you know is a terrible deal for a landowner," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

Shumlin walked out on a press conference last week when reporters pressed him on details of the original land he purchased for the 2,200-square-foot home. Some raised concerns that Shumlin may have received a better deal on the property because of his high-profile position.
