Group 'tagging' texting warning on sidewalks

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A Burlington group is spray-painting sidewalks in hopes of making roadways safer.

Several intersections along Main street now bear cautionary phrases like "stop texting and lookup."

The effort targets walkers, bicyclists, and drivers. It's part of an effort led by Local Motion and the safe streets project.

"What we're trying to do is move away from finger-pointing, if only cars would slow down or bikes would stop at the stop signs and instead change the conversation to what can each of us do to make streets safer," said Jason Van Driesche, of Local Motion.

Spokespeople say they expect to tag warnings downtown, on UVM and Champlain College campuses, as well as the Pine Street area.

The markings are done with a paint typically used on athletic fields, so they'll need to be re-applied should heavy storms hit.
