Movies in the Morning: 'And They Kept Silence'

MANCHESTER, Vt. -

High atop Mount Equinox in Southern Vermont is one of the strictest monasteries in the world.

And now for the first time ever, Rutland filmmakers have been granted access and were able to take their cameras to see the solitary world of the Carthusian order.

Sandi and Scott Switzer say their new film, "And They Kept Silence," gives viewers a sense of what daily life is like for the monks.

"The monastery is built with slabs of granite from barre," Sandi Switzer says, "and it's a huge rugged almost fortress monastery. And it truly reflects the life they lead inside; it's rugged, it's austere and it's very simple."

There are some 20 Carthusian monasteries in the world, but this is the only one in North America.

The filmmakers plan to have a public screening soon.
