Doctors in our region are fielding numerous phone calls from patients concerned about the outbreak of meningitis linked to tainted steroid shots.
At Fletcher Allen's Pain Management Clinic, operators are fielding about 50 calls a day regarding fungal meningitis and concern over recent or future steroid shots. The clinic's medical director says that's about one-third of all the calls they receive daily.
"I think most of the patients that call are about to receive them. We've had some patients reschedule their appointments and some of the patients that I've seen back in clinic for repeat injections usually ask me-- where do we get the steroids, if there is any risk for them of meningitis of this sort with the steroid injections they're getting," said Dr. Carlos Pino, an anesthesiologist at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
Pino says Fletcher Allen gets its steroids directly from Pfizer, not the compounding company in question in Massachusetts.
Vermont is not on the CDC's list of states that received any contaminated material.
