UVM farm sells apples

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

We are in the middle of apple season and sales at most orchards are brisk.

One orchard in South Burlington does not advertise its apples for sale, but they still sell plenty. There was a steady line of shoppers at the UVM Horticultural Farm Friday. There are at least a dozen different varieties of apples to choose from. The apples are grown here for research. But once they are ripe, the farm sells them by the pound or by the bushel. Each year the farm opens its doors during apple season. And there is a loyal client base.

"Every Friday at the Hort Farm we have been selling apples for a long time. It is the farm's biggest source of income and we only sell on Fridays from 10 to 4 because we want to minimize competition with local growers," said Marielle Fisher, a UVM senior.

The money raised funds upkeep on the horticultural farm as well as a big organic apple research project one of many agricultural projects that are ongoing.
