ESSEX, Vt. -

The public got the chance to see emergency responders in action Sunday.

The Essex Town Fire Department held its annual open house. In one demonstration, Chief Charles Cole explained what it takes for emergency personnel to free someone from a bad car accident.
He said the annual event attracts the public and offers learning opportunities. "This is a way that the kids can also come here with their parents they come, check out the apparatus, see what it is that we do, take a look a the gear, they have to opportunity to put fire gear on if they want to and just ask questions and see what we're all about," said Essex Town Fire Chief Charles Cole.

Future firefighters and those who attended the open house also had the opportunity to enjoy food-- hot off the grill. The department also spent time this week visiting local schools and daycares.
