BURLINGTON, Vt. -
International paper in Ticonderoga is going to pay for a natural gas pipeline under Lake Champlain.
Vermont Gas and International Paper signed an agreement that will bring natural gas service to the paper mill by 2015. The mill says natural gas will help cut energy costs. The next step -- a pipeline that would extend from Vermont underneath the lake to International Paper in New York.
This is a win for the whole region. It's a win for Vermont because the transmission line to Rutland, serving them much sooner than we would have. It's also great because plus green house gases will be down," said Steven Wark with Vermont Gas Systems.
Vermont Gas will be submitting permit requests for the first stage of the pipeline in December. The estimated cost of the project is 70-million.
