Detectives making progress in NY murder case

Posted: Updated:
WESTVILLE, N.Y. -

It's been ten years, but the most asked question in the small Franklin County community of Westville is still -- who killed Marie Fleury?

"You ask ten people from around here and you come up with a bunch of names. And there will be some on each list that are the same on who it could be," said David Loeb, at Dave's Barber.

The 64-year old nurse was beaten to death inside her home. A hammer was found nearby. Police have questioned more than 100 people but still no arrests have been made.

"It's been kind of scary at times, you wonder if it could happen to other people," said James Premo, Fleury's Neighbor.

Franklin County District Attorney Derek Champagne said investigators are getting closer to solving the murder.  He told WCAX in a written statement:

"We have narrowed the number of suspects to a much smaller pool, some of whom are presently incarcerated on other charges."

Champagne also revealed a potential motive for the crime:

"We believe the perpetrator had previously been at the house and likely knew the Fleurys...the investigation has been focusing on a residential burglary approach, and those who have engaged in residential burglaries in Northern Franklin County at that time through present."

The news does not surprise David Loeb, who knew the Fleurys and can see their house from his barber shop. He said many in town knew Marie's husband would not have been home at the time the murder occurred. "They knew exactly where to look and somebody who knew his routine too," he said.

Residents are glad progress is being made, but said they will remain on edge until an arrest is made. "It's been trying at times. You would like to know what happened and you really don't know -- make you feel a lot better if you did know what happened," James Premo said.

Police would like to remind the public that a 16-thouand reward is being offered for information that helps investigators solve the murder of Marie Fleury.
