Former Vt. deputy to go to court over dog shooting

POWNAL, Vt. (AP) - A former Vermont sheriff's deputy who resigned after he was accused of fatally shooting a neighbor's dog has been cited in connection with the incident.

Donald Loveland of Pownal is scheduled for a Nov. 12 court appearance on a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.

Melissa Kilbride said she heard two gunshots after her pit bull slipped out of its collar and ran off during a family gathering in Pownal in August.

She said the 51-year-old Loveland told her the pit bull attacked his girlfriend's dog and killed three chickens. He said he fired but didn't think he hit the dog, which was found later in woods

The Bennington Banner reports Loveland's lawyer said once all the facts are known, it will be clear that no criminal statues were violated.
